Pauli Murray, (1910-1985) an African American born into poverty, fought for her education, became a freedom fighter for Civil Rights and all human rights. She was a lesbian who became a lawyer and, later in life, the first Black female Episcopalian priest. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, with whom she shared an incredible friendship, dubbed her “firebrand.”
