To be sure, millions of people have definite ideas about him and countless theological debates and even wars have been waged over the subject of just who and what Jesus was. Most Christians believe that he was God made flesh who came to die as a substitute for our sins.

But over the past century, a new image of Jesus has emerged as ancient texts, originally rejected by the early church, have been discovered, translated, and made readily available not only to scholars but to the general public.
