Join UUCP on Wednesday, December 14th at 7:00 PM for our “Artists on their Art” Series. We are pleased to have four very accomplished artists for our “Artists on Their Art” series: Ron Hilliard, Sydelle Postman, Karen Shannon and Alice Harrison.
Ron Hilliard got started drumming as a way to relax and meet new people. “Drumming is one of the few ways you can come together with little preparation and have a good time. The rhythms are basic and over time reach back to a peaceful time in your life.”
Sydelle Postman first started drumming in Brooklyn and was taught by Ubaka Hill, whose mission was to teach women to drum. “After I moved to New Jersey I began to take drumming lessons with Steve Deats and a group of “congeras” (women drummers). We have a good time playing together and helping one another remember the rhythms.”
Karen Shannon has been drumming for at least ten years. “I really love getting together and working on the Afro-Caribbean rhythms we are learning. I find having to focus on the drum meditative, challenging and joyful. The rhythms are composed of different parts and breaks and have been passed down from generation to generation.”
Alice Harrison creates collages. “The creative process for me is intuitive – starting with materials and/or marks that I make. I like putting things together – sometimes pieces that seem not to go together. Combining things with a former life with new materials is a wonderful challenge.” Visit Alice’s website: www.alicenharrison.com
There will be time after for questions, discussion and some refreshments. We look forward to seeing you!
