Join us for Juneteenth Rally to Say the Word

That is true right here in New Jersey, where we have one of the widest racial wealth gaps in America. New Jersey’s white residents boast a median net wealth of $106,210, compared to a jaw-dropping $179 for Black and Latina/o residents.

That is less than the cost of a laptop.

Join us on June 19 when, together with U.S. Senator Cory Booker, Congressional Representatives Bonnie Watson Coleman and Donald Payne, Jr., state legislators, multi-faith clergy and powerful advocates from across the state, we mark Juneteenth by coming together in Newark to Say the Word Reparations – and to call for New Jersey to pass pending legislation (S322/A711) to establish a Reparations Task Force in New Jersey.

Masking and social distancing will be observed.

At the Institute, we believe it’s time to embrace the word Reparations, not to run from it.

Reparations can look like different kinds of investments in New Jersey’s Black communities, but ultimately it’s about enacting policies to finally repair the harm.

A Reparations Task Force that can study New Jersey’s unique history and present inequities – and make policy recommendations to address them – is a crucial first step.

We hope to see you on Juneteenth, and stay tuned for other opportunities to Say the Word with us.

In the meantime, remember to take action to urge elected officials to pass the Task Force legislation at 400YearsNJ.org.

Thank you, as always, for standing with us. You can find other social justice actions to take here, and donate here.

Onward!
