John Lewis Voting Rights Act

On Sunday we helped kick off a week of solidarity actions with Faithful Democracy and continue with Faith in Public Life and other friends (details below). I myself joined a moving event for pathways to citizenship!

Yet later today, the House is expected to vote on H.R.4, and your Representative needs to hear from you in support of the John Lewis Act — call and click in defense of a healthy, inclusive democracy, dial 888-738-3058.

Michael, H.R.4 is vitally urgent! It would restore federal ability to block state and local governments from passing racially discriminatory bills and reestablish voting protections outlined in the landmark 1965 Voting Rights Act that were stripped away in the 2013 Shelby County v. Holder Supreme Court ruling and further damaged by the 2021 Brnovich v. DNC decision. Where the For the People Act sets the expectations, the John Lewis Act protects our rights and provides a remedy when required.

We need to side with love on this… we need to act!

“Between January 1 and July 14, 2021, at least 18 states enacted 30 laws that restrict access to the vote. These laws make mail voting and early voting more difficult, impose harsher voter ID requirements, and make faulty voter purges more likely, among other things. More than 400 bills with provisions that restrict voting access have been introduced in 49 states in the 2021 legislative sessions.” So we know the forces of greed, and exclusion, are once again using race-based, xenophobic tactics to divide, dilute, and deny our power.

These voter suppression bills sully the sacredness of our votes, and supporting the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (H.R.4) today, is one of the best ways we can fight them right now. Click and call!

In love and for justice,
