SUMMARY:CULTURAL (MIS)APPROPRIATION OR WHY I DON’T CELEBRATE CINCO DE MAYO - Rev. Paul Dodenhoff
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for today’s service at 10:30 a.m. led by Rev. Paul Dodenhoff. As a spiritually liberal community\, we draw from many sources\, including “wisdom from the world’s religions which inspires us in our ethical and spiritual life.” However\, over the past few years there is an increasing awareness within many spiritual traditions of how that “drawing from” often crosses the line into cultural (mis)appropriation. Marjorie Bowens-Wheatley writes “Our first task in approaching another people\, another culture is to take off our shoes\, for the place we are approaching is holy.” Join us today as we consider this increasingly important topic. \nBring a friend and stay for coffee and light refreshments. We look forward to seeing you! \nPoster by: Liandra Pires

SUMMARY:THE TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGING - The DeMasi Brothers
DESCRIPTION:Please join UUCP today at 10:30 a.m. for our musical service presented by The DeMasi Brothers. Music has always been an important part in movements of social change. Join award winning twin brothers and UU musicians/singer/songwriter/humorists Joseph and John DeMasi as they present songs that will inspire\, motivate\, enlighten and touch on issues that are relevant today. \nThe DeMasi Brothers Bio: \nJoseph and John DeMasi\, the DeMasi Brothers are award winning UU singer/songwriters who began their singing career in the folk clubs of New York City where they were born and raised. They were heavily involved in the folk music revival scene in Greenwich Village in the 1980’s and appeared regularly at the famed “Speakeasy” folk club. In 1992 they joined forces with their lifelong friend Chris Burke\, the actor with Down Syndrome best known for his starring role as “Corky”in the hit ABC-TV show Life Goes On. The trio formed a singing group for children and families\, got a record deal on BMG\, recorded four award winning CD’s and toured the country for 20 years promoting the message of inclusion\, tolerance and ability awareness. They have performed in all 53 states including the states of exhaustion\, confusion and delirium! When Chris retired\, the DeMasi Brothers put their folk group back together and have been appearing at UU churches\, folk clubs and coffee houses all across the country. They can be heard on NPR radio and have released four wonderful CD’s. Their music is embedded with their UU values and principles that they have shared with over 150 UU churches throughout the country. \nBring a friend and stay for coffee and light refreshments. We look forward to seeing you! \nPoster by: Liandra Pires

SUMMARY:AT HOME IN THE NOW - Rev. Greg Ganaway
DESCRIPTION:Join UUCP today at 10:30 a.m. for our service led by special guest speaker\, Rev. Greg Ganaway and special guest Yolanda. As creatures of habit\, we often don’t think that what we do every day shapes our lives and how we live and think. We can build habits of awareness that build upon each other. Claiming and fully occupying our place in the present can be fun. It’s doable because it’s our nature. Power\, knowledge\, creation and energy is only available in the present moment. We are at Home only in the Now. \nBring a friend and stay for coffee and light refreshments. SUMMARY:WHY SHOULD MARIJUANA BE LEGAL IN NEW JERSEY?
DESCRIPTION:On January 26\, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. the Racial and Social Justice Team\, a committee of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Palisades (UUCP)\, will hold a public meeting on the important question of the legalization of Marijuana in New Jersey. Alex Staropoli\, Esq.\, the Policy Manager for the Drug Policy Alliance (DPA)\, New Jersey office\, will be the speaker. \nLegalization of marijuana is on the agenda of incoming Governor Phil Murphy’s administration. Eight states and Washington D.C. have already legalized use of recreational marijuana with constructive results. Although there is controversy around this issue\, there are many benefits to legalization including but not limited to creating jobs\, boosting the economy\, providing funds for important social programs and abolishing the racial and social injustice of existing marijuana laws. \nSpeaker\, Alex Staropoli\, has worked on a variety of drug policy issues with a focus on criminal justice reform. Prior to joining DPA\, she was the Senior Policy and Legislative Analyst for the Governor’s Office of Crime Control & Prevention in Maryland where she worked on a wide range of criminal justice issues including pretrial justice\, substance abuse treatment and overdose prevention\, domestic violence and reentry. \nWe invite all to attend the event on January 26th for information\, questions and discussion. \nPoster by: Liandra Pires

DESCRIPTION:Please join UUCP for our service today at 10:30 a.m. led by Rev. Paul Dodenhoff. If you live in a home that relies on well water for a water supply\, it’s important to watch the safety and the supply of water in the well so that it doesn’t run dry. The same applies to the wells from which we draw the water that keeps us alive spiritually. When was the last time you examined your spiritual well? Is it time to dig a deeper well? \nBring a friend and stay for coffee and light refreshments. We look forward to seeing you! \nPoster by: Liandra Pires

DESCRIPTION:Please join UUCP for our service at 5:00 p.m. led by Rev. Paul Dodenhoff. 174 years ago\, Charles Dickens’ classic\, “A Christmas Carol” was published and became an immediate success. Dickens tale was not only a critic of Victorian England\, but still resonates as a harsh critique of America in 2017. Yet it is still one of the abiding messages of hope at this time of year. \nBring friends or family and join us for our annual Candlelight Christmas Eve Service and stay for cider and cookies after our service! We look forward to seeing you! \nPoster by: Liandra Pires \n
