California Storms Batter UUs ⛈️

Support the Disaster Relief Fund to send aid now.

As a series of atmospheric rivers continues to pour rain onto California, many parts of the state are facing flooding, mudslides, and more damage from winds and water.

The UUA Disaster Relief Fund is here for congregations affected by the storms, floods, and landslides, but we need your help now. The fund is near depletion and we have only just begun to hear from congregations in affected areas.

The UU Church of the Monterey Peninsula in Carmel, CA, has applied for a grant in response to significant damage from high winds, fallen trees, and no electrical power for two weeks.

The Rev. Elaine Gehrmann states that “because of the large amounts of rain and high winds, we have had a number of Monterey Pine trees fall on our property—including a large one which landed on the church roof, and the top snapped off, breaking our foyer skylight and puncturing the roof membrane.”

As storms are expected to continue later into January, we anticipate hearing of additional damage to congregations, especially along the coast. According to the National Weather Service, since these atmospheric river events began on December 26, some areas of coastal California have received more than 25 inches of rain.

The UUA’s Disaster Relief Fund is a concrete, material way that we show up and support our fellow UUs and their communities in the wake of more frequent climate disasters. We’re so grateful for the many people who replied quickly and generously in the fall, making possible over $100,000 of grants to our Florida congregations hit by Hurricane Ian. We hope we can count on the same for those harmed by the incessant rain out west.

Your contribution to the UUA Disaster Relief Fund now will allow us to grant recovery funds right away to California congregations and their members who need it—and any others facing natural disasters—in the days or weeks immediately after disaster.

Thank you for the many ways you give and serve.

In faith and gratitude,

Rev. Lauren Smith

Director of Stewardship and Development
