Dr. Joseph Chuman spearheaded the beginnings of the NNJSC in the early 2000’s while serving as Leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County in Teaneck, NJ, a position he held from 1974-2020.

He served as president of the NNJSC board until 2016 and has remained on the board until recently. Dr. Chuman worked all his life on behalf of human rights (teaching Human Rights at the graduate level at Columbia University), on behalf of civil liberties, and in opposition to the death penalty. He has published numerous articles in the Record of Bergen County, and has had articles published in the NYT, The Humanist, and Humanistic Judaism. He has also written on Ethical Culture and religion in several encyclopedias. He retired from the NNJSC board to devote time to writing about ethical issues.
