Vision Statement

Mission Statement

We are an intentionally diverse, anti-racist, multi-cultural spiritual community, committed to being inclusive, welcoming and nurturing, while reaching outward, beyond our faith family, to serve, and to seek racial and social justice.

We celebrate and affirm our unity in diversity, and honor each other’s unique spiritual journey.

Who We Are

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Palisades is a community that finds strength and purpose in the diversity of a world united in its spiritual essence. We believe that love is a common thread among all peoples and truth is a basic human need. We are grateful for the religious pluralism which enriches and ennobles our faith and are inspired to deepen our understanding and expand our vision.

We honor and cherish the differences that make every individual unique. Each person is valued. Their abilities, efforts and contributions strengthen us. We respect the enriching traditions that have shaped our differences and our commonalties. These bring us together in friendship and appreciation of each other.

Unity in Diversity is for us a practical rule by which we, and the world at large, may realize our best potential, mindful of the Unitarian Universalist principle which affirms and promotes the inherent worth and dignity of every person, we assert our identity as an antiracist community of faith. We welcome into our membership all those of good will, regardless of age, physical ability, race, creed, color, nationality, economic status, sexual orientation, religious background or any other attributes that have been unjustly used to label and isolate individuals or groups. We welcome the presence of all.

Fairness, kindness and respect for others are our basic guides in whatever we do. If there are differences of opinion among our members, we deal with them honestly and with good humor, aware that the process as well as the results are important. We strive for open communication among all our members and with the larger society of which we are a part. We believe that people of good will must work together to make the world a better place. No matter how small our efforts we believe that they make a difference.

What We Seek to Do

Guided by the Unitarian Universalist principles, we seek to build a community of the spirit, to gather into our membership caring and thoughtful people. We seek to create for ourselves and our children an environment that affirms our humane values, nurtures our spirituality, encourages the development of conscience, and supports action for social justice. From that established base, we seek to reach out into the community, to do what we can to help those in need, to comfort the afflicted and to follow our convictions in correcting injustice. We hope to expand understanding of the fact that diversity in our society is a great constructive strength, and to demonstrate that in action. Guided by Unitarian Universalist principles, we seek to build a community of the spirit, to gather into our membership caring and thoughtful people."

Religious Education

To guide us as we explore our spirituality, the UUCP provides educational programs for all ages.

RE for Children

Religious Education in our congregation is a cooperative religious education program. The RE Team seeks to supplement and enrich the experiences of our children, and to provide an environment in which inquiry about the religious and ethical questions of their lives can take place. Our program begins Sunday mornings with the children meeting in the fellowship hall with the adults, which helps to create a strong sense of community among us. The children then go on to their classes.

We invite your help and commitment as we continue to build this program and make it a successful and meaningful one for all our children.

Adult Programs

Adult religious education is offered as seminars and/or workshops. As of February 2, 2003, on the first Sunday of the month following the service, we will be having a series of study and discussion groups exploring the belief systems of other faiths called "Explorations of Other Faiths". Topics have varied over the years and have included:

  • Meditation
  • Building Your Own
  • Theology
  • Loss and Grief
  • Many Voices Multicultural Reading Group
  • Kindred Spirits
  • Anti-Racism Study Group
  • Death and Dying
  • Hymnal Theology
  • Movement Workshop

In addition, we have access to many programs, workshops and seminars conducted locally and continentally by the Unitarian Universalist Association. Please e-mail our Program Team Chair (Subject: Programming) if you have ideas or interests about other adult religious education programs.
